Ghosts of Shepherdstown

about

I wept so many times as I researched and wrote this song. So much incredible and heartbreaking history in the area all around Shepherdstown, WV. The infamous Antietam battlefield, site of the bloodiest battle in US history, is only a few miles away. The entire town of Shepherdstown was set up as a hospital to handle the tens of thousands of wounded and dead who were brought there. And that is what this song is about.

lyrics

GHOSTS OF SHEPHERDSTOWN
© Ron Brunk Publishing

The sun comes up on a sleepy little town
To kiss the bodies scattered on the ground
Nine miles from everywhere, they said
But never enough room for all the dying and the dead

From nearby Antietam the wounded came
Officers and privates just the same
Wagon loads of suffering and pain
But every dying soldier had a story and a name

Oooooooohhhhh…Shepherdstown…..
Oooooooohhhhh…Shepherdstown…..
Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh…..the ghosts…..of Shepherdstown

The regiments were lined up on the banks
Haunted by the ghosts within their ranks
Fear was lurking in the marketplace
They could feel it like a demon crawling on their face

Pendleton and Porter took the stage
At Boteler’s Ford a vicious battle raged
The Potomac River running crimson red
With the blood of young boys, the wounded and the dead

CHORUS

The artillery poured down a thunderstorm
On the sharpshooters hidden among the thorns
Many men were torn off at the knees
To see the elephant come roaring like a devil through the trees

The Opequon overflowed with Union blue
Bodies bobbing thick like a human stew
Good and evil dance on one thin dime
Floating all along the Mason-Dixon line

CHORUS

Late at night you can hear the phantom cry
A haunting broken-hearted lullaby
Their blood was spilled here on this holy ground
And their spirits still wander the streets of Shepherdstown
